Goal: to inspire everyone that sees the mural to use books to: accomplish their goals; ignite their imaginations; and learn about their surroundings.
This mural will feature:
Learning through Reading
Local Landmarks Holley Falls, and Holley Canal park
Literary genres of Fantasy, Science, and Nature Identification
This mural will highlight:
The importance of spending time with different generations
The ability of stories to come to life around you
The power of independent discovery through books
It will also contain:
A castle, a tiny pirate ship, a snowy owl, bugs, Jupiter, a therapy dog, girls pursuing the study of science, the Milky Way, hidden creatures, and books!
As you drive East into downtown Holley, one of the first things you see is the Northeast wall of the library, a blank brick wall with boarded up doors and windows. This project will transform those boarded up rectangles into doorways filled with color welcoming you to Holley with art.
Each section features a local setting - the canal, and Holley Falls Park - and an individual or group reading a book. The subject of the book appears around them…
A grandmother reads to two children by the canal, while a castle fills the distant background and a tiny ship of pirates anchors at the canal bank;
The Milky Way swirls above a girl reading about space exploration in the upper window, while Jupiter rises behind her;
A child reads about insect identification to a therapy dog at Holley Canal Park, while insects inhabit the grass around her, labeled and identified.
The goal of this project is welcome people to Holley with art instead of boarded up windows, but it is also to increase awareness of the library's location and hopefully library attendance!
